A FINE AND RARE PAIR OF CELADON-GLAZED ORMOLU-MOUNTED VASES The porcelain 18th century, the French mounts circa 1775-1790 The pear-shaped bodies each with twelve vertical lobes divided by deep grooves, all under a pale glossy green glaze firing to a darker tone in the grooves, the mounts cast with berried neo-classical swags pendent from the rim mount, and a band of laurel leaves above the square plinth. 23.5cm (9 1/4) high. (2). Footnotes: 十八世紀 青釉瓜棱瓶 一對 (嵌約1775-1790年法國鎏金銅飾) Provenance: Erna Stiebel (1902-1994), New York Perrin Antiquites, Paris, 16 September 1997 A European private collection This finely potted vase, applied with a brilliant glaze displaying a bluish-green tone, reflects the 18th century penchant for the celebrated Song dynasty green-glazed wares and the remarkable technical developments achieved at the kilns at the time. Delicate celadon glazes were produced during the Kangxi reign, achieved by reducing the amount of iron, which was typically found on Song dynasty Longquan celadon wares. The production of celadon wares greatly expanded in later times. According to the 'Commemorative Stele on Ceramic Production', compiled in 1735 by Tang Yin (1682-1756), supervisor of the Imperial kilns, various types of celadon glazes were produced at the time. Tang studied in detail the finest antique ceramics of the Song and Ming periods so he could understand their workmanship and physical quality, as well as their harmonious shapes and designs. Compare with a related green-glazed vase, Yongzheng mark and of the period, in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Qing dynasty official wares from the Yongzheng to the Xuantong reigns, Shanghai, 2014, pl.4-18. A related celadon glazed lobed vase, Yongzheng mark and of the period, was sold at Sotheby's New York, 8 October 2019, lot 137. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
