MURPHY ON FITZGERALD'S CHARACTERIZATION OF HIM AS DICK DIVER. MURPHY, GERALD. 1888-1964. Autograph Letter Signed ('Gerald') to Berton Roueché on Tender is the Night and Fitzgerald's mixed portrayal of he and his wife Sara, One sheet (8 x 5 in. sight), matted and framed double-sided with the original envelope (frame 10 1/2 x 13 1/2 in.), inscribed on both sides, on personal letterhead stationery, addressed to New Yorker writer Berton Roueche, dated December 5, 1961, thanking him for sending Murphy a copy of the revised edition of F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender Is the Night. He writes, AN EXCELLENT GERALD MURPHY LETTER ON TENDER IS THE NIGHT, commenting on Fitzgerald's characterizations of Gerald and Sara Murphy as well as Zelda. He notes, 'I recall Scott giving me (in 1934!) the final proofs to read. I was surprised to find how much he had been observing us without giving us the feeling he was doing it.' He continues: 'Dick Diver is superficially me - otherwise Scott himself. A strange mixture, and I wonder how successful... However, as he said to me when I admired it, in part: There's a magic in the book.'
