A George III silver nutmeg grater Thomas Phipps and Edward Robinson, London 1786 Navette form, the hinged cover featuring the 'GARDNER' family armorial within a bright-cut medallion and flanked by floral swags, to the interior a steel rasp, further bright-cut laurel leaf borders and prick-dot decoration to the whole, the base with flush-hinged cover, height 2cm, length 5.5cm, weight 1.5oz. Footnotes: Property of a Private Collector This is the crest associated with the arms of the GARDNER family of Uttoxeter Staffordshire. Perhaps, guided by the assay date of 1806, the property of Alan Hyde GARDNER (1770-1815) born Uttoxeter, Staffordshire and later Admiral, KCB and 2nd Baron GARDNER of the English and Irish Peerage, the son of Admiral Alan GARDNER (1747-1809) 1st Baron by Susannah Hyde GALE (1749-1823) a Jamaican heiress and daughter of Francis GALE (1727-1774) by Susannah HALL (1727-1794). He was married twice: Firstly in 1796 to Maria Elizabeth ADDERLEY (1776-1831) daughter of Thomas ADDERLEY by Margaretta BOURNE. In 1805 they were divorced; Secondly later in 1809 to Charlotte Elizabeth SMITH (1785-1811) daughter of Robert SMITH (1752-1838) 1st Baron Carrington of Wootton Warren, Warwickshire banker and slave owner created 1797 by Anne BOLDERO-BARNARD (1756-1827).
