De Quincey's narrative of addiction, his anonymous first book and the first of its kind, was first published in the London Magazine in October and November 1821. It conferred instant literary fame on the author, who added a detailed record of his opium consumption to the book form edition. Provenance: Frank Brewer Bemis (1861-1935), bibliophile, collector of printed and manuscript poetry, and member of the Grolier Club, bookplate.
