A Spanish gilt-metal and enamel Cruz de Beneficencia of the First Class 1926 Awarded to a 'Miss Baker' in 1926 by the King of Spain for her role as 'Secretary & Director of the International Bureau for the Suppression of Traffic in Women & Children', mounted as a brooch, 7cm (2 1/2in) diam., in circular presentation case, the reverse with plaque stating 'Presented to the / National Vigilance Association / In Memory of My Sister / June, 1927. / Minnie B. Judd.', together with an English Privy Councillor's hat with ostrich plumes, previously belonging to Samuel Hoare, the later Viscount Templewood (1880-1959), the label to interior marked 'S. Hoare', 45cm (17 1/2in) long, the medal: 7cm wide, 7cm deep, 1cm high (2 1/2in wide, 2 1/2in deep, 0in high) (2) Footnotes: The Civil Order of Beneficence was a Spanish civil distinction created in 1856 during the reign of Isabella II. It was awarded to individuals considered to have acted extraordinarily in the face of public calamities. Condition Report The Cruz de Beneficencia: Award is loose in mount but in overall good condition. Marks, scuffs, scratches and minor losses to wooden surround and gilt-brass. Wall attachment loose. The bicorne hat: Overall in tired condition, displaying surface wear and dirt. Some losses and staining to ostrich plumage. A large split to interior lining, with some splits to exterior detailing.
