Victoria Kawēkiu Kaʻiulani Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Cleghorn, better known as Princess Kaʻiulani, was the last heir apparent to the throne of the Hawaiian Kingdom through her matrilineal line. She was never able to accede to the throne however, as the monarchy was overthrown in 1893 when she was just shy of 18. In the years leading up to the coup, Ka'iulani had been sent to England not only to receive a proper education but to spare her from unrest on the islands - it was during this time she took up painting. The cup and saucer, dedicated to her Scottish father Archibald Scott Cleghorn, are delicately ornamented with the red and yellow feathers used by Hawaiian nobility from the Hawaiʻi ʻōʻō and red ʻIʻiwi species.
