AN ARCHIVE OF BILL CUNNINGHAM CORRESPONDENCE TO ANNIE FLANDERS. CUNNINGHAM, BILL. 1929-2016. 24 Autograph Letters Signed ('Bill' and 'B.C.'), approx. 30 pp, various sizes, New York, May 26, 1977 to November 23, 2015, many with original transmittal envelopes, some photos and artwork also present, lightly thumbed. The earliest letter here is addressed to Marcia (Flanders' original name) and complements the editor on her coverage of the George-Paul gala in the pages of the Soho News. Cunningham and Flanders worked together often over the decades at Soho News and later at Details, and the two enjoyed a warm friendship that transcended the workplace. In an October 9, 1983 letter which features an original pen, ink (and maybe whiteout?) drawing by Cunningham on the cover, he writes a gushing review of the latest edition of Details: 'Your latest issue of Details is a smash ... I found it on the newsstand in a SoHo magazine shop on West Broadway. It's full of the inventive insight of a young generation as it should be ... The detail accessary pages are superb ... the original layout and mix of different elements speak a language we don't read anywhere else. I just know the talent was in the people around you ... This is what I wanted for you. Yes it was hard for your but worth it. I knew I had to pull away so another point of mine could be seen. It's this that will make your magazine not the up town stuff any one comments on, nor the ads of J. Beene. I agonized over the decision ever since last may's issue which I knew was totally wrong for Details' young audience. I couldn't be happier to see your results. Keep your spot light on N. Yorkers inventive designs, writers, etc.' Lot to be sold without reserve.
