Follower of Pieter Neefs II (Flemish, 1620-after 1675), Flemish (17th/18th century) Cathedral Interior with Figures unsigned oil on canvas 41.3 x 36.5 cm (16 1/4 x 14 3/8 in). framed 55.7 x 50.5 x 6 cm (21 15/16 x 19 7/8 x 2 5/16 in). Footnotes: Provenance A Newport, Rhode Island, estate. N.B. This work was examined via digital images by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) in 2023. Although the painting bears a presentation plaque naming the artist Bartholomeus van Bassen (Dutch, C. 1590 - 1652), RKD scholars believe the painting to be by an unknown follower of Pieter Neefs I and Pieter Neefs II, based on their depictions of Antwerp Cathedral.
