JEAN NAGAI (B. 1979) Thats the Way Of The World 4, 2021 signed, titled and dated (on the reverse) acrylic and correctional fluid on canvas 12 x 9 in. 30.5 x 22.9 cm. Footnotes: Provenance Courtesy of the artist Artist statement: Nagai's work is about the relationship between perception/adaptation and the varied landscapes we inhabit. Using acrylic in a simple pointillism technique that is informed by his Japanese immigrant parents and the energy of underground culture. On one side meditative and efficient, and on the other abrasive and disorderly, and not as incompatible as they seem. Having previously relied on a serene repetition of color and dots while working in remote locations like the muffled wet rainforests of the Pacific Northwest to the expansive deserts of New Mexico, now currently in a dense and noisy city his methods have become more circuitous and layered; anxiously eroding the boundaries of a single points of paint to the extent that the medium has begun to build upon itself three-dimensionally, and increasing in scale, warping and combining different layers of reality.
