UTAGAWA KUNISADA (UTAGAWA TOYOKUNI III, 1786-1865) AND UTAGAWA YOSHITSUYA (1822-1866) Edo period (1615-1868), mid- to late 19th century Three oban tate-e prints and one oban tate-e triptych print: two oban and one triptych print by Kunisada, the first a yakusha-e titled Rien kyokaku den (Story of a Chivalrous Man in the Theatrical World), depicting the actor Nakamura Utaemon in the role of Honjomaru Tsunagoro, dated 1863, 36.5cm x 27cm (14 3/8in x 10 5/8in); the second, a yakusha-e triptych depicting three actors respectively in the roles of Hozumi Tanzaemon, Katanaya Hanshichi and the geisha Ohana from the kabuki play Kohada no kaii ame mo furu numa, dated 1859, each sheet approx., 35cm x 24cm (13¾in x 9 7/16in); the third a sumo-e depicting the wrestler Tsuneyama Goroji, dated 1852, 36.7cm x 25.2cm (14 7/16in x 9 15/16in); the last a yakusha-e by Yoshitsuya, titled Togo Ichidaiki (The Legend of Togo), dated 1861, 37.5cm x 25.3cm (14¾in x 9 15/16in); all variously published and variously signed; the first in a card mount.
