Dog Pommel Hanger, attributed to William Gowdey, Charleston, South Carolina, third quarter of the 18th century. The hilt with chased and openwork counter-guard, two chains connecting to a well-formed dog's head pommel with smooth bone grip; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and single narrow fuller. Blade lg. 29 3/5, overall lg. 35 3/8 in. Condition: Hilt has minor wear, grip has tight hairline cracks; blade is mostly bright with scattered areas of gray toning and associated light to moderate pitting, tip has been resharpened.
