LUTTRELL PSALTER. Original Illuminated Manuscript, 86 ll, titled 'Illuminations Copied by Lady Harriet Frampton and Miss Emma Talbot from the Loutrell Psalter Temp Edward I & II, in the Possession of Joseph Weld Esq, Lullworth Castle Co. Dorset,' 1832, Oblong Folio (325 x 382 mm), contemporary red velvet lettered and decorated in gilt, gilt gauffered edges, contemporary morocco case, spine gilt. A few stray spots, but leaves generally clean, joints cracked, some general wear to case, joints partially cracked. Provenance: Lady Harriet Frampton (Fox-Strangeways) of Dorset (1778-1844) & Emma Talbot. A wonderful collection of finely illuminated miniatures, details and initials from the Luttrell Psalter including 43 plates, two of which are double-page as well as accompanying text leaves, a title and introduction all with illuminated borders. The Luttrell Psalter, made for Sir Geoffrey Luttrell of Irnham in Lincolnshire (d.1345) is considered a national treasure and is 'famous as one of the richest of all sources for the illustration of contemporary everyday life in medieval England.... It's illumination, though less polished than that of some of the slightly earlier manuscripts of the period, is of unsurpassed vitality ad marks the last stage of the East Anglian style. No directly comparable work is known (Backhouse The Illuminated Page 94). The present piece was produced while the manuscript was in the possession of Joseph Weld of Lulworth Castle. It remained with the family until it was later purchased by the British Museum in 1929. Buyers' Premium and Charges
