BONET, THEOPHILE. 1620-1689. Sepulchretum: sive anatomia practica, ex cadaveribus morbo denatis. Lyon: Cramer & Perachnon, 1700. 2 volumes. Folio (354 x 213 mm). Volume I title page printed in red and black. Contemporary calf, spines with 6 raised bands, later red morocco lettering pieces. Joints cracked, rubbed, lacking title page in volume II, front free endpapers loose in both volumes, some marginal dampstaining, occasional browning or spotting. Provenance: The Haskell F. Norman Library of Science and Medicine (bookplate; his sale, Christie's, June 15, 1998, lot 307); George Bell (early signatures deleted in each volume); Myddelton (armorial bookplates); H. Hinckley (signature in second volume and his ink deletion of owner's name on previous bookplate). FIRST EDITION, THE NORMAN COPY. 'This is the first collection of systematized pathological anatomy. It contains clinical and pathological descriptions of nearly 3,000 cases selected from the literature from the time of Hippocrates, but mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries. It is the most useful reference book for early descriptions of pathological conditions' (GM). This was Bonet's 'greatest work ... The first edition appeared after he had been in practice over thirty years; it contains references to more than 400 writers and is based on some 3,000 autopsies. He includes diseases from ancient to contemporary times with emphasis on the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries' (Heirs).
