An English carved and painted juvenile carousel ride figure of a bear Attributed to John Anderson, circa 1910-20 The animal looking slightly to sinister, with outstretched legs and glass eyes, with carved blue ribbon, mounted on a later wrought-iron stand, 26cm wide, 92cm deep, 55cm high (10in wide, 36in deep, 21 1/2in high) Footnotes: Provenance: The Collection of Lord and Lady Bangor, London. The Tussaud's Collection of Fairground Art (acquired from the above by 1973); their sale, Christie's, Wookey Hole, Somerset, 6 October 1997, Lot 49. The Anderson firm originally honed their wood carving skills by the docks in Bristol, providing carved decoration and figureheads for the many ships manufactured there. As ship building, and therefore the need for embellishment, declined at the end of the 19th century, the firm adapted their talents to the decorative requirements of the increasingly popular fairground trade. By 1895 Andersons of Bristol were established producers of roundabout horses, before diversifying into other species in keeping with other makers. Their later animals often displayed a distinctive ribbon on their necks, saddles or underblankets and some preen with the flower emblem of the city of Bristol.
