A PAIR OF DANIEL DREW DOCUMENTS RELATING TO THE BUFFALO STATE LINE RAILROAD. DREW, DANIEL. 1798-1879. Document Signed integrally ('D. Drew'), selling 200 shares of Buffalo State Line Railroad Stock to Joseph Buttrell, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 p, 4to (170 x 200 mm), n.p., August 29, 1861. WITH: Document Signed ('Geo Palmer') granting Daniel Drew 100 shares in the Buffalo and State Line Railroad Company, partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 p, 4to (145 x 220 mm), n.p., September 20, 1854, with engraved vignettes, light creasing, recto signatures obscured, both documents float-mounted and framed to 565 x 565 mm. Provenance: Private Collection, Beverly Hills, California. Daniel Drew began his career running a steamboat in competition with Cornelius Vanderbilt, before turning to stock speculation. He amassed a tremendous fortune before losing most of it in the 'Erie War,' his conspiracy with James Fisk and Jay Gould to prevent Vanderbilt from gaining control of the Erie Railroad, which imploded when Fisk and Gould betrayed him.
