FOLLOWER OF ROBERT SALMON (BRITISH, 1775-1845) COASTAL VIEW WITH APPROACHING VESSEL AND FISHERMAN TENDING NETS Unsigned. Oil on canvas, framed. 4 1/4' x 6 1/2' sight size, 13' x 15 1/4' framed size. Footnotes: N.B. The painting at hand appears to be a copy after Robert Salmon, in particular an oil on panel called Fishermen at Work which was offered at Sotheby's New York in 2012 and which is referenced in John Wilmerding, Robert Salmon: Painter of Ship & Shore, (Boston, 1971) as no. 991 on page 97. That composition, which measures 7 3/4 x 10 inches, includes extra figures and trees on the right, but has the same background landscape with the distinctive profile of the mountains and a small ruin in the midground, as well as the placement of vessels and figures. OVERALL CONDITION: Canvas trimmed and mounted to wood panel. Mounting bubbles. Stabilized tear with retouch to upper right corner. Paint losses along the right edge.
