Attributed to José Antonio Ruiz Rey (Spanish, 1695-1767) A Pair of Naval Battle Scenes of Royal Navy Ships of the Line and Oared Galleys unsigned oil on canvaseach 76.0 x 36.0 cm (29 15/16 x 14 3/16 in).framed each 86.5 x 45.7 x 4.5 cm (34 x 18 x 1 13/16 in). Footnotes: Provenance By descent in the family of the present owner since at least the 1950s. N.B A few of the ensigns present in the painting of the ships of the line are tentatively identifiable. The three red flags with St. George's cross in their cantons are the red senior ensigns of the Royal Navy, in use from 1625 to 1707. The long white-and-red masthead pendant flying from the ship at third from left is a British pendant of private ships of the battle fleet, in use in the late 17th century and more generally after the Napoleonic Wars. The blue flag flying from the other mast of the same ship bears a distinctive gold horizontal anchor; beginning in the mid-17th century, this was the identifying attribute of the Lord High Admiral's flag. There are many iterations of this flag. Most other streamers and ensigns present in these paintings are difficult to identify, primarily due to their fading colors.
