A FINE CASED AND INSCRIBED PAIR OF METROPOLITAN POLICE MODEL REVOLVERS, c. 1864-66. Serial numbers 1863 and 6788, .36 caliber round barrels, the barrel of 1863 marked 'METROPOLITAN ARMS Co. NEW-YORK,' the barrel of 6788 unmarked; fluted five-shot cylinders, case-colored frames, silvered brass trigger guards and grip frames, the grip frame of 6788 engraved 'Wm. J. Creasey. Newburyport, Oct. 1861' and 'Roanoke Feb 8/62/Mch 14, Newbur[--],' walnut grips, all visible serial numbers match including the wedges; both housed in a mahogany case opening to a compartmented and blue velvet lined interior with a Colt Patent steel ball/bullet mold, embossed copper powder flask, two tins of Eley caps, a pewter oiler, a nipple wrench and a package of five Colt Combustible Envelope cartridges. Barrel lg. 4 1/2, overall lg. 9 1/2 in. Condition: Very good overall condition, 1863 retains approx. 90% overall bluing, case colors on the frame and hammer are thin, silvering on the trigger guard and grip frame are approx. 10%, grip is very good with minor dings and dents, action functions properly; 6788 retains approx. 70% overall bluing, case colors on the frame and hammer are very good, but have abrasions, silvering on the trigger guard and grip frame are approx. 40%, grip has minor wear, action functions properly; case is very good and accessories are very good. Footnotes: Note William J. Creasey (1822-1903) of Newburyport, Massachusetts, enlisted as a lieutenant in the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry on September 11, 1861. He resigned due to illness at New Berne, North Carolina, on July 24, 1862. Lot includes a file of copies of records detailing Creasey's service.
