A VERY FINE AND RARE LIMITED EDITION 18K GOLD AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH BRACELET WATCH COMMEMORATING THE APOLLO 11 SPACE MISSION AND THE MOON LANDING IN 1969 Model: Speedmaster Professional 'The First Watch Worn On The Moon' Reference: 145.022-69 Date: c. 1969 Movement: 17-jewel manual wind, No. 28080661 Dial: Brushed gold Case: Tonneau form, screw down case back, No. 145022/69 Strap/Bracelet: 18k gold Omega link Buckle/Clasp: 18k gold folding clasp Signed: Case, dial, movement and clasp Size: 42mm Accompaniments: None Footnotes: The Omega Speedmaster Professional, Reference 145.022-69, features the same design as the steel version, Reference 145.022, however was produced with a solid 18k yellow gold case and accompanying bracelet. Additionally, the solid gold dial, known as the Type A2 or OM dial (Or Massif), was decorated with onyx hour markers set in gold frames, and paired with black handset and typography the combination gave a wonderful contrast of colors. The current lot is a beautiful example of the first version of the step dial and case back on the gold Speedmaster Apollo 11. The dial has an oval 'O' in Omega and the 'S' in Speedmaster joins up with the 'P'. Additionally, the engraving is unpainted on the case back and the bezel is in the color of burgundy red, while later modes have the engraving painted red with similar color of bezel inlay. These watches, made to commemorate the first landing on the moon, were given out to those involved in the Space program including astronauts and politicians, as well as a selection being offered in the open market through retailers.
