CHURCHILL (WINSTON) Signature ('W S Churchill'), in ink on reverse of a printed menu for the Cambridge University Conservative Association Annual Dinner held at The Red Lion Hotel, Cambridge, 4 page printed insert, some discolouration and spotting, 8vo (206 x 142mm.), Friday 5 March 1926 Footnotes: Churchill's signature was collected by Edgar Hyde, then an undergraduate at St. John's College, Cambridge, at the annual University Conservative Association Dinner in 1926. At the time Churchill was serving as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Baldwin and a few days after this dinner was held, he received the royal commission into the future of the mining industry, sparking events leading to the General Strike in May. After graduating in Natural Sciences, Hyde went on to join the Indian Civil Service where he was the Administrator (and latterly Deputy Commissioner) of Bastar State with Maharani Prafulla Kumari Devi. He served there until Independence, whereupon he turned his considerable talents to art dealing. His papers are held at the Centre for South Asian Studies, University of Cambridge. Edgar Hyde came from a family of active Conservatives. His father Sir Harry Hyde acted as Lord Beaverbrook's agent when, as William Aitken, Beaverbrook won the Ashton-under-Lyne seat in the December 1910 general election. It is reported that his 'bumptious' election campaign brought him some notoriety. Harry Hyde was to become President of the Ashton-under-Lyne Conservative Association and Chairman of Lancashire County Council. Provenance: Edgar Hyde (1906-1981); by descent to the present owner.
