Admiral Augustus Keppel: A good South Staffordshire enamel patch box, circa 1780 Printed and carefully hand-coloured with a half-length portrait of Admiral Keppel within a raised scrollwork border, the pink base embossed and coloured with floral sprigs, a polished steel mirror to the interior, 5.5cm long Footnotes: Admiral Keppel commanded HMS Victory as his flagship at the Battle of Ushant on 27 July 1778. Controversy stoked by political animosity followed the battle and Keppel was court martialled. He was honourably acquitted and set about repairing his reputation which had been compromised by the accusations. Medals were struck to disseminate the news of his acquittal and probably served as the source for the portrait on the enamel box. One such bronze counter dated 11 February 1779 bears the legend 'Justice Triumphant and Malice Defeated', see the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich Collection MEC1443.
