Achille-Constant-Theodore-Emile Prisse d'Avennes (French, 1807-1879) Cange under sail on the Nile at Thebes, Luxor, a pair one bears indistinct inscription 'My Boat on the Nile/Painted for me by Monsieur Prisse at Thebes/...1839/William...' (on backing board); the other bears an indistinct inscription 'My Nile Boat/Painted for me by Monsieur Prisse at .../February 18?9/William Robertson' (on backing board) watercolour heightened with white each approximately 24.8 x 32.1cm (9 3/4 x 12 5/8in). (2) Footnotes: Emile Prisse d'Avennes was an artist, writer, linguist, traveller, archaeologist and engineer. In 1827 he was employed by Muhammad Ali, viceroy of Egypt (1805-48), to help with the modernisation of Egypt, but he eventually struck out on his own. In the late 1830s and early 40s he gained a reputation among European travellers for his knowledge about the ancient temples and tombs at Thebes (Luxor), as well as his skill in copying the inscriptions and reliefs. Based on the inscriptions on the backing boards, these two watercolours were commissioned by a British tourist called William Robertson, which would have been one of many commissions that Prisse received. Robertson can be seen in one of the compositions sitting under the awning of the cange. The Victoria & Albert Museum hold two very similar works by Prisse in their collection.
