According to the gallery label attached to the backing board of the latter work, it is inscribed 'Gulmarg, Kashmir' (verso). Hilda May Gordon is well known for her watercolours depicting the landscapes and figures that she encountered on her travels. It is believed that she was taught by the renowned artist, Frank Brangwyn, and even accompanied him on a sketching trip to France. This trip could have been what sparked her interest in travelling the world. Her first trip took place during the First World War, when she served as a Voluntary Detachment nurse in Europe and the Middle East, until returning to Britain in 1921. The following year, she embarked on her first independent around the world trip which took her through 22 countries throughout Europe, India and East Asia, eventually returning to London in 1928. She continued to travel until the outbreak of World War II, when she remained in London once more. She documented her travels through her artworks and exhibited a number of her works in both New York and London.
