Pond from Henry M. Stanley 1890' on the title to volume 1, 2 author portrait frontispieces, 32 plates, 10 colour-printed maps (4 folding, of which 2 are in pockets at end), illustrations in the text, small tears at folds of large maps, modern half maroon morocco over original marbled boards, g.e., 8vo, New York, Harper & Brothers, [1878] Footnotes: Provenance: Major James B. Pond, presentation inscription from the author, and bookplate. Pond (1838-1903), an abolitionist who fought on the Unionist side in the Civil War, later managed successful lecture tours including a hugely popular one for Stanley throughout the United States. When contemplating an approach to Stanley, Henry Ward Beecher told him to 'Get Stanley if you can. He is one of the greatest men we have. I have been reading Through the Dark Continent; it is a great book' (Pond, Eccentricities of Genius, 1900); Christie's, 26 September 2007, lot 69. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
