An interesting Chelsea oval dish, circa 1762 Of elaborate rococo form, the shaped border reserved with four scroll-edged panels interrupting washes of deep mazzarine blue, 35.2cm wide Footnotes: Provenance Elizabeth Adams Collection This moulded rim appears on the Mecklenburg-Strelitz service, which was ordered in 1762 by King George III and Queen Charlotte as a present for the Queen's brother, Duke Adolphus Frederick IV. A platter from the service was sold by Bonhams on 23 July 2013, lot 86. The present lot has been left unfinished, perhaps serving as an experiment to see how the underglaze cobalt fired in these larger areas. The blue flows unchecked into the centre of the dish demonstrating why pieces from the Mecklenburg-Strelitz service limit the blue to the four small panels in the border. A duplicate set of the service was made shortly after 1762, with concave instead of convex lobed panels, presumably to distinguish it from the Royal service. However, the present lot has convex lobes akin to the service itself. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
