A very rare Liverpool (William Reid or James Pennington) coffee pot and cover, circa 1760-65 Of fluted baluster form with a distinctive fluted spout and unusual grooved handle moulded with a biting serpent thumbrest and satyr mask terminal, the high domed cover with a double-ogee profile and acorn finial, painted in blue with chinoiserie landscapes depicting buildings amongst rockwork and trees, a scroll and diaper panel border to the rims, 26.8cm high (2) Footnotes: Provenance Watney Collection Illustrated in 'Miscellany of Pieces', ECC Trans, Vol.7, Pt.3 (1970), p.248, pl.216, no.2 (as Chaffers). This distinctive handle usually indicates a John or Jane Pennington origin, but is found on a small number of earlier Liverpool wares. Whilst Maurice Hillis suggests that this most unusual coffee pot is probably James Pennington, see Liverpool Porcelain (2011), p.328, the precise form of fluted spout usually suggests a William Reid origin and would appear to be unknown on James Pennington examples.
