John Doherty (Australian, born 1949) The Merchant's House signed, inscribed and dated twice ''The Merchant's House' (Medieval Period) - 'The Wholesale Co-operative Society' 1994/5 Location:- 'Kilmallock' Co. Limerick, IRELAND. John Doherty '95 (on the canvas overlap) acrylic on linen 101.5 x 152.5 cm. (40 x 60 in.) (unframed) Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, U.S.A. John Doherty was born in Kilkenny and studied architecture at Bolton Street before moving to Sydney, Australia and becoming a painter. Taking as his subject matter Ireland's changing architectural and economic landscape, Doherty meticulously records the ordinary minutiae of bygone days such as crumbling shop facades, rusting petrol pumps, old boats and discarded oil drums which allude to the human stories not directly portrayed. Decaying buildings and objects are all treated with compassion in the same photo realist manner, illustrating the faded glory of times gone by. The present work depicts Sarsfield House, a late medieval merchant's house. The structure originally had three floors but lost the top floor in the early 20th Century. This house is the single survivor of what may have been thirty houses of similar design lining the main street of Kilmallock. The surviving architectural features, such as the carved mouldings, the three-centred doorway arches, the prominent stringcourse and the gabled capstones to the joints are all characteristic of Irish building in the 16th Century and the structure is of national importance due to its rarity now within Ireland. Doherty's work is included in major private collections in Ireland, Australia, America and Europe, and in the public collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Institute of Modern Art, Chicago; Irish National Stud, AIB Dublin and London; and Artbank, Sydney.
