Kevin Gaines (Irish, born 1969) Persona II bronze with a green patina, on a polished limestone base 33.5 cm. (13 1/4 in.) wide (including the base) Artist's proof, aside from an edition of 7 Footnotes: Provenance The Artist Exhibited Dublin, Jorgensen Fine Art, Summer Exhibition, 2013 Dublin, Solomon Fine Art, Summer Group Exhibition, 2016 Literature PVA Journal, Issue 9, 2018, p.34 (ill.) Irish sculptor Kevin Gaines first gained recognition as an artist during the early 1990s. Exhibiting extensively in Ireland and England he established a reputation for his organic abstract sculpture. Working with the sculptor Lev Neznansky, Gaines honed his skills carving directly in wood. Subsequently under the tutelage of the sculptor Cathy Carman he first learned the art of bronze casting. This series of work, Persona, unites both aspects of his training as an artist, with the original pieces in this series carved by hand in wood before being cast in bronze, a method of making that mirrors that of Barbara Hepworth. His distinctive casts in bronze perfectly capture the intricacies of his original working methods in wood. Similarly to Hepworth, Kevin realised that his original wood sculptures crack and age over time, so by casting them in bronze, they gain a permanence, preserving them in their intended state.
