Rubbed, corners chipped, joints cracked, browning and spotting. BOUND WITH: The address to the Senate, the members of the House of Representatives. . . delivered in the Senate Chamber on the 4th day of March, 1801, on his taking the oath of office as President. Baltimore: W. Pechin, 1801. 8 pp. Ninth edition, published in the year of Jefferson's election as the third President of the United States, and bound with the early Pechin printing of Jefferson's Inaugural Address, 'We are all Republicans : We are all Federalists. If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it.' In his Notes, Jefferson expounds his beliefs on such topics as the separation of church and state, government, checks and balances, individual liberty, etc, creating the 'best single statement of Jefferson's principles, the best reflection of his wide-ranging tastes and talents' (Peden, Notes, p v). The addenda offer a defense against charges that he was an enemy of religion, made by Federalists who tried to use his Deistic views against him. Evans 37703; Howes J-78; Sabin 35900.
