GOLD RUSH: BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF VIRGINIA CITY. BROWN, GRAFTON T. 1841-1918. Viginia City, NT, 1864. Lithographic print, San Francisco: C.C. Kuchel, [1864], 700 x 1,040 mm, depicting a 'bird's-eye' view of Virgnia City surrounded by inset frames of each of the major mining operations in the area: the mills of the Ophir, Curry, Potosi, Bullion, Mexican, Silver State, Chollar and Savage mining companies. Even browning, slight dampstaining from right edge into image area. Matted and framed, not examined out of frame. African-American artist Grafton T. Brown created 2 versions of this print, one (as here) with the mining operations surrounding the view of Virginia City, and another with prominent buildings in the city depicted in the insets around the same central view. Brown moved to San Francisco from Pennsylvania in the early 1860s and opened up his own lithography business, specializing in images of the rapidly-developing West. After going on a geological survey mission in 1882, he changed his focus to paintings of natural subjects such as the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone.
