Modèle 'Grand Tour' représentant un sanglier blessé sculpté en marbre bardiglio, sur base en marbre fleur de pêche, Italie, XXe siècle A 'Grand Tour' carved bardiglio marble model of a reclining boar, Italy, 20th century Sculpté en position assise sur une base naturaliste et sur un socle rectangulaire en marbre fior di pesca (restauré) Carved seated on a naturalistic base and on a stepped associated fior di pesca marble rectangular plinth (restored), 30cm wide, 16.5cm deep, 27cm high (11 1/2in wide, 6in deep, 10 1/2in high) Footnotes: The model of this reclining boar derives from the celebrated Roman marble copy of the Hellenistic original model. The precious marble was given by Pope Pius IV in 1560 to Cosimo I de Medici, and was subsequently located in the Uffici. Cosimo II de Medici commissioned the famous bronzier Pietro Tacca to cast a bronze model which was finally executed in 1633 after quite a few years. It was placed in the Loggia del Mercato Nuovo in Florence, where it remained on view for centuries, becoming a good fortune monument not to be missed in Florence. It was recently replaced by a well executed copy, while the original Tacca cast is conserved in the Bardini Museum. Interestingly and erroneously, the sculpture is referred to as 'il Porcellino' which means little pig. For centuries, it has remained a favourite souvenir among Grand Tour travellers.
