Three sealed 'Cylinder' wine bottles One dated 1792 Of olive-green tint with deep 'kick-up' bases, comprising a narrow-bodied example with a slightly sagged base, the slightly tapering neck with a string rim, applied to the side with a circular seal inscribed 'R./ Mofeley/ 1792', 27cm high, another narrow-bodied example, the long neck with a fattened lip and string rim, applied to the side with a seal bearing a crest, a garb supported by two arms embowed, 27cm high, the last a 'Squat Cylinder' with a wide body and medium tapering neck with a tooled lip and string rim, applied just below the shoulder with a circular seal inscribed 'T D B' within a lined border, 25.5cm high (3) Footnotes: Literature David Burton, Antique Sealed Bottles (2015), p.802 (dated bottle), p.1482 (crested bottle) and p.1072 (initialled bottle) The dated bottle is the only intact example bearing this seal, although two detached seals are recorded by Burton. The crest on the crested bottle has not been identified, and it has been suggested that these bottles are early 19th century copies made in mid-late 18th century style. A number of bottles with a seal bearing the initials 'T.D.B' are in The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, suggesting a possible American connection.
