GEORG KOLBE (1877-1947) Porträt Marianne Farenholtz signed with the artist's monogram (on the top of the base) and stamped with the foundry mark 'H. Noack Berlin Friedenau' (on the left side of the base) bronze with golden brown patina 13 3/8 in (34 cm) (height) Conceived in 1933. This bronze version cast between 1933-1936 in an addition of 5 Footnotes: The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Dr. Ursul Berger. Provenance Sale: Christie's, London, June 19, 2007, lot 424. Acquired at the above sale by the previous owner; their sale, Christie's, New York, May 7, 2009, lot 240. Acquired at the above sale by the present owner. Marianne Farenholtz (1896-1990) was married to Wilhelm Farenholtz, a sophisticated oil manufacturer from Magdeburg, Germany. The couple was eclectic in their artistic interests and patronized writers such as Stefan George as well as being avid supporters of the Friedrich Holderlin Society. In addition, Marianne and Wilhelm were close friends and supporters of modern artists such as Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Erich Heckel, Emil Nolde, and Georg Kolbe, who executed the present bust of Marianne in 1930.
