CHARLES CARYL COLEMAN (Italian/American, 1840-1928) Florentine River Landscape with Mist signed and dated 'C.C. Coleman 1861' (lower left); with a label from Abby Taylor Fine Art, Greenwich, Connecticut (affixed to the reverse) oil on paper 7 x 17 3/4 in. (17.8 x 45.1 cm)framed 12 7/8 x 23 3/4 x 1 1/4 in. (32.7 x 60.3 x 3.2 cm) Footnotes: N.B. The work of Charles Caryl Coleman is often compared to the work of another artist in the present sale - Louis Comfort Tiffany. (Coleman's brother, in fact, founded the church department of the Tiffany Company in 1889, before later opening his own glass company.) Indeed, Coleman was heavily influenced by turn-of-the-century decorative arts and the International Aesthetic Movement, and is known most for his elaborate, often floral decorative panels. Coleman maintained a large collection of decorative objects and textiles which inspired much of his work. The present work was painted early in Coleman's career during his time studying in Paris under Thomas Couture. Coleman returned to America in 1862 to serve in the American Civil War with the Union, but would soon return to Europe to work alongside artists like William Morris Hunt and Elihu Vedder. While not as evidently decorative and Aesthetic in style as some of Coleman's other work, the present work displays the evocative brushwork and almost otherworldly spirit that defines much of Coleman's oeuvre. The geometric forms of the leaves and the carefully composed river mist particularly betray the influence of decorative, Orientalist art. The Coleman's paintings are in the collections of many museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
