EACH PRINTING OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE NEW FAIRY TALES ANDERSEN, HANS CHRISTIAN. 1805-1875. Nye Eventyr. Copenhagen: C. A. Reitzel, 1844-1845. First and second series, comprising 7 pamphlets in 7 volumes, the 5 pamphlets of fairy tales collected with the 2 additional printings of the first pamphlets. 8vo (167 x 110 mm). Half titles to parts 1 & 3 of the first series (no half-title called for in Nielsen for part 2), half-title to part 1 of the second series (without half-title to part 2 of the second series). Contemporary purple patterned cloth, spines gilt, stamp-signed by Henning Jensen, spines slightly sunned, internal spotting and a few stains, title page and half-title to the third issue of series one part one bound in on stubs. Includes the first appearances in print of 'The Ugly Duckling,' 'The Nightingale,' 'The Snow Queen,' 'The Red Shoes,' 'The Shadow,' and 'The Little Match Girl,' among others. Beginning with the first pamphlet, Andersen dropped the sub-title 'Told for Children,' signaling the seriousness of his art form. 'All four stories [in the first part] are original and owe no debt to folk tale or myth ... These were the most mature and perfectly constructed tales he had written, and though some of them at once became and have remained favourites of children, Andersen melds the childlike and the profound with exceptional artistry' (Wullschlager, Hans Christian Andersen, p. 231). 'It was not until 1843/4 that the appearance of 'The Ugly Duckling' swept them [Andersen's fairy tales] into general favour' (PMM 299). See Hersholt p 27 (third issue); Nielsen 428, 429-432, 454, 455-456, 467, 468-472, 516, 517-520, 529, 530-534. A RARE COMPLETE SET.
