A Kashan lustre pottery bowl Persia, 12th/ 13th Century of conical form on a short vertical foot, decorated in golden brown lustre on a cream ground, the base decorated in cobalt blue, the interior with four radiating geometric panels, each containing a seated figure and scrolling vines, the exterior with stripes, accompanying Japanese wood storage box 16.2 cm. diam.(2) Footnotes: The form and decoration of the present lot are evocative of the early 'Monumental style' of Persian lustre pottery. As identified by Dr Oliver Watson, the bold rendering of the Monumental decoration style, based on Egyptian lustre work, is distinct from the delicacy of the later 'Miniature' style based on book illustration (Oliver Watson, 'Persian lustre-painted pottery, the Rayy and Kashan Styles,' Trans. Oriental Ceramic Society 40, 1973-5, p.12). The present lot also features the classical Seljuk face and clothing rendered in foliate decoration, all characteristic features of the Monumental style. For further reading, see: Oliver Watson, Persian Lustre Ware, London: Faber & Faber, 1985, pp. 45-67.
